"Do not despise the lore that has come down from distant years;
for oft it may chance that old wives keep in memory
word of things that once were needful for the wise to know."

If You've Got To Do What...?

Ashley Hutchings
The Guv'nor

The merry tune you hear playing is Si Tu Dois Partir, from Fairport's album, Unhalfbricking, and.....it got them an appearance on that grand old television chestnut, Top of The Pops.( stop that laughing, you, in the back row...!) on August 14, 1969. Here we think it would be best to give a little background information to the translation(?)of the song. The story goes that Fairport Convention was playing a gig at the Middle Earth and thought it would be amusing to do Dylan's song in French cajun style, so the band called for volunteers from the audience to help with the translation, and, to quote Richard Thompson, " ``About three people turned up, so it was really written by committee, and consequently ended up not very cajun, French or Dylan.'' Anyway, we all love a good sing-along, so courtesy of well...just about everyone...here are the lyrics....and if you're wondering what this has to do with Ashley Hutchings, you need to look very closely at the album cover below of Fairport performing this song, as we said, on Top of The Pops...see, on the far right, resplendent in his French beret....

Resplendent Beret
Performing Si Tu Dois Partir on Top of The Pops August 14, 1969

Everybody join in!!!

Si Tu Dois Partir
Bob Dylan.
Trad. Arr.

(Chorus)

Tu sais j'aurais des cauchemars
et aussi mauvais de conscience
Si je t'empêche des le faire
Ce que vraiment tout espèrs

(Chorus)

La La La ...

(Chorus)

and now in English.!!

If You Gotta Go, Go Now
(Bob Dylan)

Listen to me baby,
There's something you must see,
I want to be with you gal,
If you want to be with me.
 Chorus

 But if you gotta go,
It's all right,
But if you gotta go, go now,
Or else you gotta stay all night.

It ain't that I'm questionin' you,
To take part in any quiz,
It's just that I ain't got no watch,
An' you keep askin' me what time it is.

(Chorus)

I am just a poor boy baby,
Lookin' to connect,
But I certainly don't want you thinkin',
That I ain't got any respect.

(Chorus)

You know I'd have nightmares,
And a guilty conscience, too,
If I kept you from anything,
That you wanted to do.

(Chorus)

It ain't that I'm wantin'
Anything you never gave before,
It's just that I'll be sleepin' soon,
It'll be too dark for you to find the door.

(Chorus)

Now wasn't that fun!?
